Cold Process Soap Vs Hot Process Soap

It is very difficult for people to tell them apart, unless much information and education is given to the public. The usual soap that we purchase from the supermarkets is made using hot process, as it is a much faster process to make soap commercially, and it is a much more business viable way to manufacture soap in large batches in a shorter processing time, as to maximize profits. However, in the hot process manufacture of soap, also known as cooked soap, the glycerin in the soap is removed as a by-product of the heating process together with the lye that is waste.

Glycerin is a natural humectant that draws moisture to our skin and maintains the water balance in the intercellular matrix. It helps to keep the the homeostasis of the skin in optimum balance. It is the glycerin in the soap that makes our skin remain hydrated and soft after our baths. The hot process soap normally found over the counter in the supermarkets is devoid of this important element, that is glycerin. Without glycerin, our skin can appear to be very dry, even after applying lotions.

In fact, commercially, the valuable and beneficial glycerin that has been removed together with the lye in the hot process of manufacturing soap, is isolated from the waste and sold separately as expensive beauty bars, and supplied to spas and beauty centers.

As for the commercial hot process soap that is now devoid of glycerin, synthetic fillers and fragrances, even artificial moisturizers are added in its place. These synthetic chemicals may cause skin irritation to sensitive skin and allergies may develop over long term usage and exposure to these chemicals. Though some manufacturers may add some natural essential oils to these synthetic soap, but the essential oils are spoiled as it is mixed with the other chemical substances in the soap.

In contrast, in cold process soap, the glycerin remains intact in the soap, as the soap is not subjected to any heat in the manufacturing process. Most natural handmade soap manufacturers do it on a small to medium scale basis where personal attention and care is given to the soap-making process.
