What are some ways that I can make my improvised chord progressions sound more full and lush?

Usually when I improvise something on the piano I'll start off with block chords in the left hand and then accompany them with a melody. And it sounds okay. But if I want to embellish the chord progression a little with with wide arpeggiations in the left hand and harmonize the melody a bit in the right, I can't seem to bring out the right sound - the texture generally sounds dull and boring. How can I make the music sound more full and lush?

My advice would be to think like a continuo player in the left hand, being sure to pay special attention to the bass and/or the inversion of the chords, thinking in terms of harmonic function. The root is the strongest note of the chord; the third is more unstable, and the fifth is actually dissonant in the bass. You can use these different functions to give your music more goal-directed motion. (note that it is unconventional to invert any tertian harmony stacked higher than a seventh)
