What I can substitute for lye (sodium hydroxide) in the manufacture of soap?

Is there a better alternative to bleach (sodium hydroxide) in the manufacture of soap? I am the soap and do not want to use bleach because it is very dangerous. Do you have any suggestions better work as well or better than the bleach in the manufacture of soap? Thanks!
