How do teen celebrities keep their hair looking fresh longer without adding harsh chemicals ?

sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate ... it's called, it seems, is bad for you. But is it really? And if so, why?

What is sodium laureth sulfate?

Both sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and its close relative Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) are commonly used in many soaps, shampoos, detergents, toothpaste and other products that we hope will foam up. Both chemicals are very effective foaming agents, chemically known as surfactants.

The SLS in our soaps is exactly what you would find at a car wash or even a garage, where used to degrease car engines and plants. In the same way as it dissolves the grease on car engines, SLS also dissolves the oil on the skin, which can cause a drying effect.

The alleged dangers

Supposedly, SLS is also absorbed into the body of the application skin. Once it has been absorbed, one of its actions is to mimic the activity of the hormone estrogen. This has been blamed for a variety of health problems from PMS and symptoms menopause, the decline in male fertility and breast cancer.

Apparently, it also does something nasty to our skin proteins, not only cause irritation, but also allows environmental contaminants easier access to bottom, the sensitive layers of the skin and can damage eyes, causing cataracts.

American Research Medical Center, University of Georgia indicates that SLS and SLES can react with other substances so chemical found in cosmetics to form nitrosamines and 1.4 dioxins, which are carcinogenic.

The counterargument

On the website of the American Cancer Society suggests that there is information that the bad press for SLS is an urban myth invented to help manufacturers and distributors of products Flogging natural and organic consumers most unsuspecting and gullible.

The Truth About Sodium laureth sulphate

The truth is - who knows? However, when in doubt, a little common sense is perhaps the best policy. It is a fact that cancer is increasing. It seems outside the realms of possibility that the chemicals that abound in our foods and products that place in us and in us, might have something to do with this increase.

It may seem unlikely that the authorities would allow manufacturers to put as many potentially harmful chemical substance in their products - but we are talking about the same authorities who allowed the widespread publicity of snuff and alcohol approved the release of drugs such as thalidomide.

Products Natural skin care makes sense

Personally, I think it makes sense to take life as natural as possible. Intuitively, about ourselves with a lot of harsh chemicals does not seem a great idea. It does not take much extra effort to find great smell, healthy cosmetic products really work and look great on your swim platform. For me, it's common sense to choose natural skin care products and natural body care.

It's a "must" for traveling

by SifusWoman from San Francisco, CA on 2010-05-03
I used this product last year when I went on vacation to England. It lasted a long time. I was there for 2 1/2 weeks and washed my hair everyday. I still had some left over at the end of the trip. It's much lighter to pack than a bottle of shampoo and my hair was really clean. I had their travel container too, which helped it last longer. I highly recommend it!

great for kids

by orangegirl from MA on 2010-01-10
as an adult, I would only use this once in while but my husband loved it. It also works great for kids hair too. Very gentle and no dertergents and I would probably buy it again.

Great for travel

by N. Plant from Silicon Valley, CA on 2009-01-09
This shampoo performs well even in less than ideal water. I took it to the Philippines, and it lathers really good in the well water we used. Hair comes out clean but not stripped - so it's a little different than your usual shampoo. Smell is pleasant, but not great. The best part about it is that TSA won't care how much you bring.

The best shampoo

by Ellen L. Morales from Miami, FL United States on 2008-11-25
My sister and I have used this shampoo for years and have converted many people to it also. It smooths fly away hair and leaves your hair healthy. Why pay for all that water in a bottle of shampoo?

Great value and great for the environment

by UGOGRN from Virginia, USA on 2008-04-20
I like this shampoo, but my hair is dry. So, I am going to try the formula for Damaged Hair. The bar shampoo is easy to store and use in the shower. I also like not having lots of bottles to recycle. The bar also lasts a long time. I've had mine for 3 weeks now.It takes a little longer to lather than shampoo from the bottle, but it smells clean and works well.

Greatest shampoo ever!!!

by K. Wallace from California on 2008-11-25
I've used this shampoo bar for 2 years now. My hair is incredibly soft and healthy. Wonderful shampoo. And it feels so clean.

Great Little bar of soap

by Sawdust46 from Bay City, MI on 2008-05-31
I love this shampoo. Leaves my hair conditioned and managable. I do have thin hair so I don't have to use a lot. A couple of passes is good for me and it lasts over 2 months, which is similar to a bottle of shampoo. I use this 7 days a week as I wear a hardhat everyday except for weekends.

Good but expensive

by N. Townsend from on 2008-05-21
This shampoo does an excellent job of cleaning and conditioning hair. The ingredients are olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil, spring water, a binder and essential oils for fragrance. It is made in Cornish, New Hampshire from an old New England recipe and is considered earth and user friendly. It is a great shampoo for backpacking and traveling. So far, so good. However, there is the matter of size and cost. I was amazed when I saw the size of the bar which I estimate to be slightly larger than half a bar of Ivory soap. So I paid $8.20 for two tiny bars of shampoo and, along with shipping costs of $5.99, the total cost was $14.19. A claim on the bar wrapping is that each bar offers the approximate number of usages as a 24 oz. bottle of most modern shampoos. I doubt that. I wash my hair 3-5 times a week and a bottle of shampoo lasts me more than a month. I have used the bar shampoo five times and I can see that it will not last that long. I like this shampoo but I think it is too expensive to use long-term. If I could find it in my local drugstore for, say, $2.50 a bar, I would keep using it. As things stand now, I will probably return to using baby shampoo. If cost is not an issue for you, this is an excellent choice.

Eco-friendly, Travel-friendly, and it works!

by K Haugen from Oregon, USA on 2010-04-22
I started using bar shampoo when TSA-security started putting the squeeze on carry-on liquids. Using bar shampoo gives me space for other liquids in my 1-quart bag. It washes well & rinses clean. It's also lighter and more compact than the equivalent amount of liquid shampoo, which makes it great for travel and even better for backpacking. Since trying Liggett's, I've tried several other brands, and keep finding more and more, so if one doesn't work for your hair, another probably will. Liggett's is a little more prone to getting mushy than some of the others I've tried.A few things I've learned to make it work better for me: Let it drain & keep it dry; when traveling, cut off smaller pieces to take only what you need; when shampooing, get the bar really wet and rub it directly on short hair, or work up some lather in your hands and apply to longer hair.Last but not least, bar shampoo gets an A+++ for earth-friendliness. It usually contains non-toxic ingredients. Unlike liquid shampoo, which comes in plastic bottles that are toxic to manufacture, difficult to recycle, and often just tossed in the landfill, bar soap is usually wrapped in paper or cardboard. Unlike liquid shampoo which is mostly water, bar soap is also lighter and more compact to ship from factory to store, which uses less fuel and causes less pollution.

Great Shampoo

by Fred Lewis from Chicago, IL. USA on 2009-07-21
My barber sold me a bar recently. After using once I was totally sold on the product. I have had sensitivity issues with shampoos for many years and have been using a horse shampoo - YES - a horse shampoo with great results.I like this bar shampoo and will use it regularly from this point forward.

The best!

by Uncle Mike from Aliso Viejo, CA USA on 2009-05-08
This is the only shampoo I have used for over 15 years. I have a beard and very fine hair, and it keeps both clean and oil-free. I can't say enough good things about Liggett's Bar Shampoo.

If only I weren't allergic to it!

by Chocolate Fan from CA United States on 2009-04-11
I loved the scent and the way it made my actual hair feel and look BUT oh no! My scalp went wild with an allergic reaction to an ingredient. Not sure which one.It is most likely a more unique thing to some people but beware that it is a possiblity.Fiddle sticks! If only I hadn't had it happen.

Great Stuff!

by J. Lemieux from germany on 2008-04-13
I have short, colored, fine hair. I switched from Liggett's original formula to the herbal about four months ago, because the herbal works better with our hard water. It's a great product which doesn't add more plastic to the landfills, it's biodegradeable, sulfate free and my hair looks very healthy. After about a week or week and a half I find that I do get a little bit of build up, but I just keep a spray bottle of vinegar in the shower and that takes care of that. My only real complaint is that I can't find it in the stores where I live!

Wonderful soaps!

by Catherine Hinkle from Fairview, WV United States on 2009-08-08
The Fernwood Soaps are pretty much my favorites. Nothing artificial, great price, wonderful scents. I have been buying them for several years now, and they are really great in the winter time to use for hand washing to keep from getting sore, itchy hands. Also great as a shampoo.

Will buy more!

by L. Parker from Dalllas, TX on 2008-04-20
I have been using this soap for hair washing, and my hair turns out fluffy and soft every time. I have a lot of hair, but it's individual strand is really thin.. so thin but thick. Short blonde hair by the way. I cut my hair awhile back and swore up and down that I would never use stripping detergent shampoo again.. this is the best soap I've found thus far. Also, an awesome price as well. Most handmade soaps on th internet are about 4 to 6 dollars each. And the smell is rich and noticeable.. not bland like some HM soaps. I will buy this again.. next time ordering more than one.

wonderful lemongrass bar

by K MITCH from ANNAPOLIS MD on 2006-01-05
I received this as a Christmas present. It has the most refreshing lemon scent and provides luscious moisturizing lather. It does seem to be disappearing too quickly. I intend to double up!

Description

Knotty Boy Dread Shampoo bar with organic Hemp Seed Oil is formulated for people with dreadlocks, working to prevent and combat the problems sometimes encountered during the dread locking process and thereafter. From a healthy scalp grows healthy dreads, so Knotty Boy is working hard to dispel the widespread myth that all dreadlocks are dirty. Dreadlocks, just like braids, cornrows, and any other hairstyle, need to be washed regularly to keep them clean. The shampoo bar from Knotty Boy is a good way to do that.Knotty Boy Dread Shampoo bar is a herbal organic hemp shampoo that utilizes the naturally germicidal and anti-bacterial properties of tea tree, rosemary and peppermint essential oils to help eliminate flakey dandruff and itchy scalp conditions. Completely free of conditioners, this all-natural shampoo cleanses and gently controls oily buildup without hindering the locking process. Suitable for dreaded and non-dreaded hair. Made with 100% all natural ingredients and contains no chemical detergents or lauryl sulphates. Dread Shampoo is biodegradable and eco-friendly.Directions: Wet hair and get the shampoo bar wet. It becomes very foamy just like a bar of soap, so you can either work up a good, thick lather in your hands and scrub it onto your scalp, or you can rub the bar directly on your scalp and work up a lather that way. Once you've done that, get down to the scalp with your fingertips and give it a thorough, but gentle scrub. Leave on the hair for 2 or 3 minutes. Allow the shampoo to rinse through the dreads, thereby cleaning them without handling them too much. This is the best way to clean new, still-soft dreads without damaging them. Rinse and repeat as necessary - you will be able to feel how squeaky-clean your scalp is after it's been rinsed, and where you need to shampoo again.

Features

  • Eliminates dandruff and combats itchy scalp!
  • Long-lasting, all-natural formula!
  • No synthetic chemicals, color or foaming agents!
  • No animal ingredients or testing!
  • 100% biodegradable (this means mountain-stream-washing friendly)!

spare your dreads

by Zach Jacob from Santa Cruz CA on 2010-05-18
This shampoo bar comes in a fairly small rectangle. It smells nice like tea tree oil and mint which is BAD for dreadlocks because it will leave RESIDUES in your hair, especially if the bar is applied directly to your locks. These residues will lubricate your hairs and loosen your dreads, and can potentially lead to mold inside your dreadlocks. The first and only time I washed my hair with this bar all of my loose dreads were washed out and my ropes loosened up into wavy matts. I'm giving the bar 2 stars because I do like the smell and because it works great for washing my armpits, which is now the only thing I use it for.

Smells great, works great, not so bad for the environment

by Paul M. Wiedel from Arden Hills, MN on 2009-06-04
I've been wondering why most shampoo is sold as a liquid. Most of the weight and volume in liquid soaps is water. So I thought I'd give bar shampoo a try. There were a few regular shampoo ingredients that I wanted to avoid: palm oil and something else--I don't remember. The Ilumina Organics Shampoo had neither of those ingredients. It's been a couple of months since I started using it and I really like it. My hair feels healthy and I haven't gone bald yet. The shampoo smells great. Application is simple, get a lather going in your hands and apply it to your hair and rinse. I do recommend following up with a conditioner. I have yet to find a bar conditioner though.

Bad first impression

by Meghan King from Rhode Island on 2010-07-16
I have never used a shampoo bar before and was excited to try it! I have thick dark hair just past my shoulders. I have only been using this product for a week, but it seems to leave a funny greasy-ish texture to my hair. I normally have very dry scalp and hair, so I was very surprised! I'm definitely rinsing it out very well, so I wonder if it's stripping the natural oils and forcing my scalp to over-produce to compensate? Or maybe it's not mixing well with my conditioner? Any ideas?

rough on hair, great for face

by Smeggy from Collingswood NJ on 2008-10-26
I discovered that this shampoo bar works great on my face. used it all over in the shower and my hair came out not so good but my body and face felt and looked great. (it drys my thin processed hair out & leaves it feeling funny & kind of weighed down even though it is dry. the texture is weird. i didn't like it as a shampoo at all)anyway, for the face i think it rocks! i sometimes suffer from cystic acne & have oily skin w/dry patches and this bar does wonders for my skin. This rosemary mint bar is better than any other bar or wash for the face that i've tried, and i've tried A LOT of different brands believe me. (nearly every drugstore brand and many samples of various different brands from my dermatologist) some others are ok but this is my favorite. There is something about this formula, it doesn't clog my pores and it leaves my skin squeeky clean. feels like it really cuts through the grease and leaves no residue or annoying slimy moisturizer feel that some face washes do, but also my skin is not too dried out. which is important because it winds up getting even more oily when it is too dry after washing.

Works great for dandruff and oil

by Teresa from Everett, WA on 2008-10-24
I have a problem with dandruff if I don't use a very strong dandruff shampoo. It's something I inherited from my dad. As I get older, I've had to use stronger and stronger chemicals to control it. But now I'm wanting to get the chemicals out of my life and I thought this was going to be one of my biggest challenges.I was wrong. This was the first shampoo I purchased, and it works like a charm. I haven't had any problems at all with dandruff, even if I go a little too long in between shampoos. My hair is also on the oily side, and this shampoo works great in that regard as well.I like the way it smells too. It has a clean refreshing scent. Not flowery or artificial, just nice.

The "greenest" shampoo we could find

by Elizabeth from Burlington, NC United States on 2008-01-20
We found this wonderful shampoo via the Skin Deep database - its ingredients have lower toxicity than many common liquid brands. We came to appreciate the bar for the fact that it is light to ship as it contains no water. This improves its "embodied energy" (represents what it takes to bring the product to the consumer). It smells wonderful when used and leaves only a very light natural scent in our hair. We give it one less than perfect stars because it tends to leave residue in our slow-to-drain shower, but the clean up is easy.

Fun if not essential - would make a good gift

by Book Reviewer 2009 from Terra Firma on 2008-01-03
I'm no cosmetic expert. In fact I have absolutely zero interest in cosmetics (and don't even wear them) so you know I'm not someone who buys beauty products for fun and for the novelty of it. But I live in the desert where the dry air desiccates your skin so I sometimes have to pick up product for skin care. I got attracted to the Burt's Bees products via their cute and creative in-store displays and then ending up trying a wide range of their products.I enjoyed my first bar of this shampoo-soap, but didn't find it so essential that I could get past my inertia towards shopping and get a second bar. Basically you rub it on your hands like a bar of soap and then apply the lather to your hair. Or you could scrub it directly into your hair. Of course it doesn't lather up nearly as richly as leading liquid-shampoos, but that would be hard to expect in its soap-bar form.It gets your hair clean and has a wonderfully subtle, clean, woodsy scent. I did find myself using it up fast so it's not one of those products that you can make last awhile. But it would make a fun gift to people who like the unexpected in their beauty products. A typical reaction: "Whoa ... a bar of soap that's really shampoo? Far out!"

Best soap/shampoo I've found

by Catherine Hinkle from Fairview, WV United States on 2008-01-14
I have been buying this soap for several years now at the store in Grantsville, MD. I have tried other "natural" soaps, but I always seem to go back to Fernwood. I have used nothing else for the past few years on my hair. Could never find a shampoo I really liked until trying this. I have a friend who cannot use any other soap but this in the winter to keep her hands from getting chapped and raw. I love the fragrances, especially Hyland Zephyr. Their other products are also great, as well as their prices.

by KMcL designs from Pittsburgh, PA on 2007-02-28
I bought this shampoo/body bar at the shop in MD. I absolutely love it! Great lather. Rinses out well. Smells great. No ingredients that contaminate water supply, like some bath products. And the price is good.
