What is the lowest pH that soaps can go? As in, pushed to the very minimum and still be effective?

Soaps make use of something called a "Surfactant" which has a hydrophobic and hydrophilic end. Making it likely to bond to oil on one end and water on the other forming "miscelles" which are washed away. That said it is not necessary for a soap to be basic only that it contribute these qualities. The longer the hydrophobic chain, the more basic the the sufactant is and the more likely it is to be solid (good for soap).

However, low molecular weight (short hydrophobic end) tend to be slightly acidic and liquids. Shampoos use this type of surfactant since basic solutions can destroy your hair by breaking the disulfide bonds in keratin (main protein in hair).

As we discussed in Understanding the Beast:  Eczema Solutions, Part 1, eczema is a skin condition marked by severely rough patches or rashes on the skin that  respond to some allergens and can be as mild as a rash or blistering, oozing lesions that crack and bleed. While allopaths have a different perception of eczema, naturopaths believe that eczema can be treated and, in fact, cured. Yes, it is true that eczema tends to run in families, but this is a symptom not a cause. This article will give the reader a perspective of what naturopaths believe about the origin of eczema and provide some insights on how to begin to heal eczema, while caring for the skin with things like eczema soap and skin conditioners.

Skin is permeable. What goes onto the skin is often absorbed by the body. Skin is, in fact, the largest organ and it is responsible for filtration. It's a two-way system. Perspiration removes items from our bodies.  When we have things in our bodies that overwhelm our system, the body will try, as a last resort to get rid of these things by pushing it through the skin. Naturopaths believe that eczema is an immune system response. We have, in our bodies and on our skin, millions of bacteria. While in balance, everything works the way it should. When something triggers and imbalance, one flora is allowed to overgrow, causing problems.

Candida is such a flora. It is present on every human being and would otherwise go unnoticed. Many things can cause Candida to grow out of control, like a diet that is too high in sugar or lacks proper nutrients or a system that has been overwhelmed by infection. When that happens, the Candida begins to grow out of control and exhibit itself in other ways, like oral thrush and tooth decay or skin lesions and eczema. Rebalancing the system in such a situation requires reintroducing good flora to counteract the bad flora, limiting sugar and simple carbs and eliminating possible irritants in such items as soap and detergents.

That is the beauty of things like eczema soap. Ideally, that soap would have no perfumes or dyes and other ingredients that would trigger any more of an allergic response, causing further irritation. In a perfect world, that soap would also contain gentle skin conditioners that would help to heal the skin while the body recovers its balance. Skin is permeable. Things don't just stay on the surface. Soybean oil and canola oil are two ingredients that are commonly used in soaps today because of their ability to bind with lye. Both canola and soybean are cheap, but neither is recommended for people with allergies and even more contraindicated for people with eczema, as they typically cause flair ups. Other ingredients, though usually more expensive, are far better tolerated, like olive oil and coconut oil. Olive oil is very high in antioxidants. Coconut oil, additionally, contains Lauric Acid, a natural antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal.

Though detergent without perfumes and dyes and eczema soaps might be a little more expensive, they are far better tolerated by the skin. Furthermore, they give the body a chance to heal while a person begins to restore the natural balance needed for optimal health.
