Stylish safety in the bathroom
Aaaaah ... Thata € â € ™ s the sound you normally hear when most people enter in the bath tub. Unfortunately, however, for many Americans the utterance is more like, â € œUgh! Â € or â € œOuch! Â € Thata € ™ s because according to the American Housing Survey, only half of disabled elderly households have home modifications they need.
However, itâ € ™ s not just the aging that require safe - bathrooms can present many challenges, regardless of age. From the mother, whose center of balance can be a bit chaotic outside ... to œweekend € â € warrior, who pulled a hamstring playing soccer with his friends from college age ... six years old, now the shower on her own and needs additional support in the bathroom ... everyone can benefit from universal design products. In fact, at one time or another in our lives, almost all of us will experience temporary or permanent disability.
What is Universal Design?
Well Design, what is universal? So how are we to implement in our homes? According to experts, the definition of universal design is a house that is easy to use, regardless of a person ™ € s of age or limitations - creating an environment that is safer, more functional and comfortable.
â € œThe goal of universal design is to help people maintain their lifestyle independent, â € says Brian Grant, product manager for Creative Specialties International, a division of Moen Incorporated, and a leading designer and manufacturer of the new Home Care line of bath safety items. â € œItâ € ™ s finding products that meet the perfect balance between safety and function, but with an attractive design. The best universal designs are those that combine perfectly at home and become an integral part Room and dà © Cor. €
To achieve a stylish design with a universal design, some manufacturers such as Creative Specialties International, are working tirelessly to create products with security features that fit the overall style of the room. The new offerings include topics that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
And the best news? You donâ € ™ t need to build a new house to incorporate the characteristics of universal design and products. Many new products can be incorporated into an existing home plan - making it easier than ever to start making your home a nicer place to live.
Where do I start?
While universal design elements can be applied in all areas of the house, the room that should receive the first priority is the bathroom. Slippery floors, bursts of scalding water and herded into a shower or tub can be an obstacle for anyone - and for a person with a disability, these hazards are magnified. In fact, for many, the bathroom can be an obstacle for life independent.
ADA â € œInstalling few non-compliant products in the bathroom can make the difference between an individual, taking care of themselves themselves at home or having to depend on others, â € says Grant.
While minimal effort can result in maximum results, many owners are reluctant to install the universal design products for fear of his â € € œclinicalâ designs look bulky and uncomfortable. However, it no longer the case. Today € ™ s ADA products which respect the role of design and rugged construction with an attractive design.
Creative Specialties International placed a high priority on style and function with your new Home Care line of ADA compliant products for the bathroom. These products combine safety, solid construction with an attractive design, elegant.
According to Grant, â € œWe spent hundreds of hours in peoplee € ™ s homes that they to demonstrate typical bathing routine - from getting into the shower, in the form of signature, to the point of grabbing the soap or shampoo, even the way he chooses the towel to exit. The information we gained was invaluable when designing the new line of € products.â
So, where to begin When creating a universally designed bath? The main concern should be the bathtub or shower, as this is the location that makes most of slips and falls. The following are some recommendations to incorporate universal design in this area:
Shower
Because it increases the risk of burns for the disabled or elderly, equip your home with a pressure balanced shower system. Its valve maintains a water temperature, even so shower users will not feel increased warmth or cold water (commonly known as œshower Shocka € â €). Even when running a dishwasher or washing toilet, the valve ensures that water remains within two degrees to maintain a constant temperature of shower, comfortable and safe.
ADA Compliant Handrails
Handrails to give something to grab the enter and exit the tub. They also provide greater stability, while you're in the shower. Once in the aspect institutions, which now come in a variety of stylish designs to suit any bathroom dà © cor, and even some tap match designs to create Private coordinated look for the bathroom. Consumers often choose from a variety of sizes, from 12 to 42 inches in length.
Dual Tub Grip
For those who have difficulty passing over the side of the tub, now thereâ € ™ s an ideal solution. The new Home Care Dual Tub Grip from Creative International Specialties has a robust design without wobble and two different heights to capture - giving a wonderful aid hand in and out of the tub. Designed with areas of flat grip texture for better grip, dual tub grip slips easily into the wall of the tub and secure into place with a single system that the clamps in place with a locking lever (which requires no turning or twisting motion to install). This design allows the grip to fit in different widths of baths and skid pads protect the tub walls from scratches.
Adjustable bathtub and shower Chair
A chair shower is perfect for anyone who prefers, or necessary, to sit while showering. Find a product with non-slip rubber feet, since this characteristic not just to improve their stability, but also protect the tub from nicks and scratches. Most shower chair legs are adjustable and should most bathtubs convenient.
Hand shower
A hand shower as Moena € ™ s Revolution is the perfect accessory for a shower chair, because the product allows you to manipulate the force, the flow and direction of water without having to reach the top of the shower. Make sure the hand shower you choose has an area of great form from non-slip material that is easy to maintain and operate in a wet environment. A note of caution on hand showers: many of today € ™ s hand showers held, while convenient for seniors and others are attached to sliders to adjust its height. However, these should not be confused with support rails, and they do not provide secure support.
Bank Transfer
Great for people who have problems intensify and by the side of a bathtub, a bank Transfer is a perfect choice for those affected by arthritis, a sports injury or recent surgery - and anyone who can not easily be squatting, bending or lifting and needs more security to get into the bath. A bank transfer has two legs that rest in the tub and two legs resting on the bathroom floor, so the person can sit outside the tub and then move inside the tub by sliding across the bench. The product allows safe movement, fluid in the shower.
Beyond the Bath
While the tub and the area should receive top priority, the rest of the bathroom should not be ignored in the implementation of universal design elements. Remember that the goal is to create ease of use in the bathroom. Then are some suggestions for outside the tub area:
Paper Holder
Changing the toilet paper roll is an act that most people for granted. However, for those affected by arthritis, the necessary skills needed to perform this task can make it extremely difficult. Fortunately, Creative Specialties International recently introduced a pivoting Paper Holder (available in five different style options), which is a free spring and has a single easy load format for the paper roll can be changed easily with one hand.
Raised Toilet Seat
For those who have trouble bending or sitting, an elevated toilet seat is an excellent addition to the bathtub. Typically, a raised toilet seat is hooked onto the cup so it naturally falls on the edge of the toilet and raises the seat higher than the standard 14-15 inches off the ground. When buying a raised toilet seat, look for products that provide a mechanism lock for stability - and those can be easily removed for cleaning or when company is visiting.
Faucets
A fourth universal design bathroom that have a water faucet with lever. This attribute makes it easy to activate, especially for those with a prosthesis or persons arthritis sufferers. And today € ™ s the lever handle faucets are far from being boring to watch - different finishes and styles will help create the elegance of bath with spectacular designs without ceasing to be universal in design.
Adding a Phone
A final tip to incorporate universal design in the bathroom is to install a phone with a cable that is easily accessible from the ground. If an accident occurs, rescue help is just a phone call away.
Council's final words
While the idea of incorporating universal design in whole house can seem overwhelming, itâ € ™ s simple starting with one room and work from there. Following these recommendations, you will make your first step in achieving a safe and comfortable - all while maintaining a sense of style.
